Windy Run
Windy Run is a small stream in Arlington County, Virginia. From its source near Lorcom Lane, Windy Run flows on a northeastern course and empties into the Potomac River within the Federal parklands of the George Washington Memorial Parkway.〔Coordinates of Windy Run at confluence with Potomac River: 〕 Windy Run is surrounded predominantly by forests. It is known by many of the Arlington locals as simply "The Falls". ==Pronunciation and origin of name== There is considerable debate among some local residents whether the name is properly "win-de"—as in "Chicago, the Windy City" or "wine-de" as in a twisty, windy road. Some argue that the former is correct—a testament to the winds that blow through the area and the fact that the Run is for all but about the last 75 yards of its course is high above the Potomac, presumably where the winds are stronger, and more vigorous. Others argue for the latter, on the basis that the name refers to the twisted, meandering path that the Run takes down to the river.
